“I never thought I was drinking too much – until it all got too much,” says Becky, reflecting on her life before recovery.
It was a concerned relative, who works at Wirral Ways, who first suggested Becky’s drinking might be spiralling. At the time, she didn’t believe it. “I didn’t feel like I had a problem,” she admits. “But eventually, I realised it was affecting everything – my health, my relationships, and my day-to-day life.”
That moment of realisation led Becky to reach out for support. She started her recovery journey with a 7-day home detox, supported every step of the way by our dedicated nursing team and her keyworker. From there, she began attending groups and was soon offered a place on the Wirral Ways Discovery Academy – a 12-week programme designed to help people explore their cravings, triggers, and emotions.
Becky describes the Academy as a “journey of self-discovery” that helped her “find herself again and break the cycle of her drinking.” Alongside group work, she also accessed 1-to-1 counselling with one of our specialist substance misuse counsellors, using that space to process her past and develop new, healthier coping strategies.
After graduating from the Academy, Becky was eager to give something back. She joined the Wirral Ways volunteer programme and was placed within the Criminal Justice Team. In her new role, she supported others on their recovery journeys, sat in on medical appointments, and attended joint meetings between Wirral Ways and Probation – offering empathy and understanding from someone who had walked in their shoes.
Becky’s passion and dedication didn’t go unnoticed. Recently, she took the next step in her journey and joined Wirral Ways as a Health and Wellbeing Connector.
Becky’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformation that’s possible with the right support, compassion, and belief.
